The Department of soil and water conservation is mandated to provide technical guidance to land users in order to conserve water and reclaim the degraded land base, realize production potential by planning and establishing recommended land management practices through structural and biological measures.
Facilitate conservation of arable land within and outside catchment areas, in order to curb accelerated soil erosion.
Advocate the adoption of watershed management approach in order to encourage integrated planning of development activities.
Undertake soil investigations and classification in order to establish the various land use suitability ratings.
Facilitate the reclamation of degraded lands in order to bring them to productive use.
Promote water harvesting programmes.
Assess and harness water resources available and construct infrastructure for needed water for irrigation, livestock, projects development and domestic use.
Promotes social being to rural communities during implementation of catchment management activities.
