The Department of Environment shall be a leading regulatory agency that strives for a well managed environment which supports sustainable socio-economic development of Lesotho.
To conserve and protect the environment through coordination, research and enforcement while encouraging collective participation for sustainable development.
To manage the environment for its wellbeing, improve livelihoods and sustainable economic growth for present and future generations
- To coordinate the process of strategic environmental planning at national and district levels. - To promote environmental education and awareness ; the division represents the Department in all matters involving environmental communication with the public, private sector and individuals. - To promote and support conservation of flora and fauna in and outside of protected areas; set national biodiversity targets aligned to global biodiversity targets. - Coordinate the development and implementation of environmental pollution control strategies and policies. - Coordinate the development and implementation of environmental data management strategies. - Coordinate implementation of multi-lateral environmental agreements (MEAs). - Ensure that environmental concerns are incorporated in developmental activities.
